The Yaraka Hotel

A map below gives a perspective on the recent ’Big Wet’ in this region and the huge area it covered. As we all know Australia is big and and the map below confirms this! Our region of wet would have covered four Englands, it would have covered France and Germany and taken up Texas In the great USA.
Our region around Yaraka was mixed with everyone having some sort of damage to their properties with fencing and dams being swept away and sheep, cattle and goat losses. locals tell us that the losses seem to range from a minimum of $80,000.00 up to 4 million - this four million figure included the loss of a large homestead that has been condemned. Whilst there is financial aid available to get people operational again there are issues with exhaustion and mental health for many. Counsellors are being kept busy dealing with the negativity of despair.
The Yaraka region has mostly had positive growth with the pastures. Further west and south huge areas of top soil have been swept away and recovery is questionable time wise.
There have been some wonderful volunteer help organisations who arrived and have been here helping the property owners with fencing and cleaning debris from the fences that were knocked down by the huge layer of debris that caused a ‘wall’ for the rushing water to push over.
One of the old timers here who has experienced a number of tough times is fond of saying ‘ Well, we tighten the belt another notch and take one day at a time”. And that’s what’s happening here.
The Yaraka area has prolific pasture growth and we have a huge carpet of green and the wild flowers are starting to add colour.
The roads are now open and we’re hoping the tourists will come and enjoy our wonderful landscapes - and the green!

Gerry, doing her bar maid thing. I could be in trouble posting this photo as it doesn’t do her justice - she looks much younger in real life - phew, got out of that ok I think. ... See MoreSee Less
